About the event
Carry Me O’er is Tim McGuire’s heartfelt comedy with music. Set in 1924 Ireland, an aging father, 70-year-old Cullan McGrath asks his son to visit the family homestead outside Waterford Ireland on an autumn afternoon in 1924 with some earth-shaking news to impart.
The son, Jack, a prominent professor of Irish history and literature, agrees to come. When Jack enters the secret cellar, dug out during the Famine, he encounters a legacy he never knew he had. Jack, though, has his own monumental news to share. The bulk of the play centers on the two men’s cat-and-mouse parlaying, each trying to begin but not knowing how. Along the way, they share some rollicking anecdotes, family stories (true or not), lively Irish tunes – and a whole lot of whiskey. Finally, each relates his news and we all learn about Irish history, music, and what it means to be a family.
The show is a rousing good time, whether you’re Irish or not, come celebrate halfway to St. Patrick’s Day! It has everything – comedy, tragedy, history, pathos, music and more.
